Romanian Jug

Romanian Jug

Origin Early 1900's, Romania

Made as a utilitarian item in provincial Romania. This jug would have once been used for storing wine or oil. The unglazed clay is porous and would have helped to keep the contents cool due to the clay staying cool. Now it is best used as an ornamental piece.

Ceramics is still practised in Romania as a traditional craftsmanship, with skills passed through generations of family.
