Terracotta vessel

Terracotta vessel

Origin c 1950's, Portugal

A Portuguese water pot to keep liquids cool in hot and dry climates. Unglazed terracotta is porous and as the liquid evaporates through the vessel it cools the surface, in turn cooling the contents. The narrow opening to the vessel also helps with the cooling process. This was a very widely used method of keeping water cool before refrigerators.
