A 13th century terracotta vessel from Djenné, Mali. Women in this town have been producing ceramics since the first millennium ce. They are renowned for their skill and mastery of traditional techniques passed through generations.
The vessel would have originally been used for food or liquid storage. It’s round base signifies it was dug into the ground to keep the contents cools. The burnished top half shows the part which would sit above the ground.
There are some nibbles to the rim as pictured. Otherwise excellent condition.
A display ring is provided to enable the vessel to sit upright.
